Using my existing molds, I recently I began working with precious metal clay which consists of fine metal powder carried in a moldable polymer. I chose to use bronze metal clay but it comes in a variety of compositions including gold and silver. Although the molded pieces are fired in a regular ceramic kiln, they must be contained in a stainless steel box filled with activated charcoal. The polymer burns off and the remaining metal powder fuses to form a solid bronze object that can be polished and finished with various patinas.
Inspired by the breathtaking brassy, pyrite fossils of animals in dark shale (such as those found at Lyme Regis on the south coast of England), I mounted my bronzes on cleaned, recycled roofing slate and framed each with wild cherry.
